Working with a German TV crew

Last winter I worked together with a German TV crew in Lapland. They filmed a documentary about wind in several countries and Finland was one of them. Being in Lapland the idea was also to cover another kind of wind, the solar wind which is responsible for the aurora borealis.
It was exciting to arrange their stay, decide on shooting locations, find interview partners and more. When I picked up the crew from the airport, we drove only for about 5 minutes and already had to pull over. There were Northern lights dancing in the sky, what a great start! And Lady Aurora didn’t stop there. The next nights she put on two epic shows with auroras all over the sky.
Working together with the TV team was one of the best experiences for me. Not only was it a lot of fun getting to know the people, but I also learned a lot how much effort it takes to get the scenes spot-on.
Here is an anecdote for you: As the locals spoke mostly only Finnish, I was working as a translator between Finnish and German. I mean a lot. A few days in I told a reindeer herder the scene, where everyone should stand etc. He just looked at me with big eyes. So I repeated myself. Still nothing. Then finally one of the crew members told me: “Thomas, you speak German to the guy”…
The 2-part documentary is finished and aired for the first time on Arte on July 27th & 28th 2017 in German and French language. I also was one of the people interviewed, so watch out 🙂

Im letzten Winter habe ich mit einem Fernsehteam zusammen in Lappland gearbeitet. Das Team war vom SWR u.a. mit Sven Plöger und Rolf Schlenker. Es ging um eine Reportage über Wind, die in verschiedenen Ländern gedreht wurde. Da wir in Lappland waren, nahmen wir auch einen anderen Wind mit ins Programm – den Sonnenwind. Er ist verantwortlich dafür, dass wir Polarlichter sehen können.
Es war aufregend, den Aufenthalt komplett zu arrangieren, die Drehorte zu bestimmen, Interviewpartner zu finden und mehr. Als ich das Team am Flughafen abholte, fuhren wir nur fünf Minuten und mussten schon anhalten. Die Polarlichter tanzten am Himmel; was für ein toller Start! Und Lady Aurora machte noch weiter. Die nächsten Nächte gab es tolle Shows, der ganze Himmel voll mit Polarlichtern.
Die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fernsehteam war eine der besten Erfahrungen für mich. Nicht nur war es schön, neue Menschen kennenzulernen, es machte auch Spass mich mit Sven über Wolken, Polarlichter und andere Wetterthemen auszutauschen. Zudem lernte ich, dass Filmproduktionen einen enormen Aufwand erfordern, die Szenen haargenau zu filmen.
Hier noch eine Anekdote für Euch: Da die Einheimischen meist nur Finnisch gesprochen haben, arbeitete ich als Übersetzer Finnisch-Deutsch-Finnisch. Und zwar ziemlich viel. Nach den ersten Tagen hab ich dann einem Rentierzüchter eine Szene erklärt, wo wir stehen, etc. Aber er schaute mich nur mit grossen Augen an. Also hab ich es nochmal erklärt. Nichts. Dann kam einer vom TV-Team und sagte mir: “Thomas, du sprichst deutsch mit ihm”…
Die zweiteilige Reportage ist fertig und wurde zum ersten Mal auf Arte am 27. & 28. Juli 2017 ausgestrahlt – auf deutsch und französisch. Übrigens, ich war eine der Interviewten Personen, also passt auf 🙂

Viime talvena tein työtä saksalaisen TV-ryhmän kanssa. He kuvasivat dokumentti tuulesta eri maissa ja Suomi-Lappi oli yksi niistä. Kun olimme kerrankin Lapissa käytettiin myös eri tyypinen tuuli ohjelmassa – auringontuuli, joka mahdollista nähdä revontulia.
Oli kyllä jännä järjestää heille koko reissu, päättää kuvauspaikoista, löytää ihmisiä haastattelun ja paljon muuta. Kun hain ryhmä lentokentältä, ajettiin vaan viisi minuuttia. Sitten piti jo pysähtyä kun taivaalla tanssivat revontulia, oli kyllä loistava alku! Ja Lady Aurora jatkoi hyvällä mallilla, seuraavissa yössä oli taivas täynnä revontulia.
Yhteistyö TV-ryhmän kanssa oli yksi parhaasta kokemuksesta itselleni. Ei ollut vaan mukava tutustua uusiin ihmisiin mutta olen oppinut miten paljon se vaatii saada kuvaukset juuri niin tallennettu kuten ne pitää olla.
Tässä vielä anekdootti teille: Paikalliset ihmiset tiesivät että puhun suomea ja niin minä sain olla tulkki heidän ja tv-ryhmän välillä. Oli se paljon työtä. Muutama päivän sisällä, selitin poromiehelle miten seuraava kohtaus kuvataan. Hän katsoi minua vaan suurilla silmillä. Selitin uudelleen eikä tullut mitään reaktio. Sitten yksi TV-ryhmästä sanoi mulle: “Thomas, sinä puhut saksaa hänelle”…
Kaksiosainen TV-ohjelma on valmis ja ensi-ilta oli Arte-kanavalla 27. & 28.7.2017 saksaksi ja ranskaksi. Ja muuten, minä olin yksi ihminen joka haastateltiin 🙂
