New Year’s Aurora Getaway 2026-27
Register for 2026/27 – 6 seats available
If you want to do something very special for New Year’s 2026-27, this is it. Join Thomas Kast, a multiple international award-winning photographer on this special tour and let’s start the new year with nature’s own fireworks!
The 7-night New Year’s Aurora Getaway takes place far inside the Arctic circle around the villages of Hetta and Kilpisjärvi in Finnish Lapland. We will have special light conditions as we will experience the polar night. This does not mean that it would be 24 hours darkness. For several hours, the sun will be close below the horizon, creating moody light. Once darkness sets, we will look into the skies for the ever-mesmerizing Aurora Borealis.
One of the highlights will be New Year’s Eve. First we will celebrate in Finland, hopefully with a mix of fireworks and Northern lights. Soon after that, we will head towards Norway. We turn the time one hour back and have the chance to celebrate the New Year a second time.
During our week, we will explore nature locations in both Finland and Norway, e.g. visit the Pallas-Ylläs national park, the wonderful Lyngen fjord and the surroundings of the mighty fell Saana. You will have the options to join a husky safari and visit a reindeer herd in the wilderness with reindeer herders.
A maximum of six participants makes this an intimate New Year’s Aurora Getaway. Each person will have a lot of time for in-depth discussions regarding photos, camera settings, composition and anything else.
Further below, you can look at a photo gallery and read through reviews of previous guests of this tour (all reviews are on the Testimonials page).
As always and everywhere, the weather is an unknown. The program and its order might change depending on the weather conditions.

Detailed information
Day 1
Our New Year’s Aurora Getaway starts with the transfer from the airport Kittilä to Hetta. The two-hour drive will likely be in twilight and on the way we will check the skies and perhaps we get a first glimpse of the Aurora Borealis. It is best to have winter clothes packed so that they can be easily reached. Once in Hetta we will check in to our hotel rooms in Lapland Hotels Hetta and then enjoy our first dinner together. Weather permitting, we grab our camera gear and look for northern lights.
New Year’s Eve
During the day we will have an excursion into nature. Depending on the weather, this is one of the days for husky or reindeer. In the evening we will have a festive New Year’s Eve dinner. Afterwards, we get ready to head out and search for the last Northern lights of the now ending year – and the first New Year’s Aurora of the New Year. Our first midnight will be in Finland, after which we will head over to Norway, celebrating the New Year for a second time due to the time zone difference. Late at night we will return to our accommodation.
New Year
In daytime we visit some nice locations and at night we’ll be searching for Lady Aurora.
Day 4
Today we make our way up North to Kilpisjärvi and check in to our cottages at Tundrea. On the way, we will likely find some nice places to stop.
Days 5-7
During these days we will have everyday excursions during daytime to beautiful photo locations. The border of Norway is just a few kilometres away, we will most likely visit the Lyngen fjord and explore other nature locations in Norway. You will also have time to recover from the nights and explore the village of Kilpisjärvi and its surroundings. All cottages have their own sauna and can be used freely whenever you want. At night, we will of course head out to search the Northern lights.
Day 8
After an early breakfast this trip will unfortunately come to an end and we will have to pack our things to drive to Kittilä airport.
All program is subject to weather and might change accordingly.
Both Hetta and Kilpisjärvi are in the municipality of Enontekiö in the Northwest corner of Lapland. The population density here is around 0,24 / sqkm. Climate is arctic. The average annual temperature in Enontekiö is about -1C (30F) and in January about -14C (7F).
Hetta is located about 220km North of the Arctic circle and 35km South of the Norwegian border. It is a village with 800 people and in normal winter conditions it is here, where frost, snow and wind transform ordinary trees into mysterious snow giants.
Kilpisjärvi is 170 km Northwest from Hetta and lies at the fell Saana. About one hundred people live here, right at the borders to Norway and Sweden. Here, near the tundra, no forest grows anymore. Only downy small birches give a hint that under all that snow is some fertile soil. From Kilpisjärvi it is possible to discover the unique Käsivarsi Wilderness area (possible only with a local guide) with mountain peaks above 1,000m. Only 60km into Norway lies the fjord Lyngen with a view to the famous Lyngen Alps.

Tripod (needed)
Important for night photography and long exposure photos. The tripod will minimize camera shaking. Handheld photos in darkness will not be sharp. To adjust settings comfortably, the tripod should be nearly your height. If you don’t have a tripod, you can rent one for 25 Euros for your entire stay.
Camera (needed)
Most suitable will be a dSLR or mirrorless camera where you can exchange lenses. Your camera needs to have the option of manual focus and a complete manual mode which allows you to adjust aperture, exposure time and ISO separately. Pocket cameras with a zoom might be ok in some cases, you can contact me for that when booking.
Lens (at least one needed)
For night and aurora photography you should bring a fast lens (meaning wide aperture, with a small f-number like f/2.8 or better) to make the most of the available light. Lenses with f/4.0 are doing fine also but you might have to crank up the ISO. Auroras often stretch all across the sky. To capture a big part of it, you want to have a wide-angle lens (24mm or wider).
For daytime photography it is good to have a basic zoom (24-70mm, 24-120mm or the like). The variety helps you to create diverse photo compositions.
If you bring a compact camera, make sure the lens is f/2.8. Again, you can contact me for that when booking.
Remote control (optional)
Use during night photography or long exposures. The remote allows you to take photos without touching the camera to avoid blurry photos.
Head lamp / Flashlight (needed)
Will be important during the night. If you can get a head lamp with a red light option or with different brightness levels, it will be helpful for your night vision.
Spare batteries (useful)
In cold weather your batteries will discharge quite fast. It will be important to have at least two extra batteries with you. Using hand warmers, you can revive the batteries to get the last bit of energy out of them.

Make sure you have the right clothing. Temperatures can be around -15..-30C (5…-22F), at times colder. You will receive an overall and thick shoes, but under it, it is important to have several layers.
Bottom layer
Best is a woolen layer. For example, merino wool is excellent.
Middle layers
Another woolen layer and some fleece layers usually work well.
Top layer (under the overall)
Top your layers off with a winter jacket, best for them will be windproof.
Shoes, socks and gloves
They will be essential as your toes and fingers will be one of the biggest challenges to keep warm. Winter boots and wool socks will keep your toes warm. For your hands it is best to bring two pairs of gloves with you. A thin pair with which you are able to press the camera buttons, and thicker, windproove ones to put over the thin ones in case you get cold. Additionally you can bring hand and toe warmers, which can easily be purchased online.
Head, face and ears
Make sure to properly protect your head and ears against the cold. Having windproof, fur type of hat with ear flaps makes a big difference. A balaclava helps to keep your face warm, especially your nose and cheeks.
Hand/toe/body warmers
In case your fingers, toes or other body parts tend to get cold, it is good to bring warmers. There are many different brands, some sell variety packs like this one.
Thermos bottle
For hot juice, tea or coffee to keep you warm during our excursions.
Hand/Toe/Body Warmers
In case your fingers, toes or other body parts tend to get cold, it is good to bring warmers. There are many different brands, some sell variety packs like this one.
Laptop
To backup your photos from the camera and editing. If we are extremely unlucky with the weather, we will do some post processing in Lightroom.
