Oulu2026 – Tours to the European Capital of Culture
Salamapaja has a license for the trademark “Oulu2026”
In 2026, Oulu is European Capital of Culture. The region therefore hosts numerous cultural and artistic events. Combine the joy of culture with the beauty of nature and the thrill of chasing the Northern Lights at night. Join Thomas Kast, a multiple international award-winning photographer on these tours exploring his home turf, the region of Northern Ostrobothnia. He is currently working on the project Aurora Revelare, which will open in early October 2026 in the newly built Oulu Museum and Science Centre.
These one-week tours take place around the Oulu region, approximately 160 km south of the Arctic Circle. Together, we will attend selected culture events, some of which take place only during the specific tour dates. You can find more information about the events for each date below. In addition, we will visit various nature locations during daytime and at night we will – of course – head into the night to look for the magical northern lights.
Your hotel is located directly next to the center, making it easy for you to attend cultural events that interest you.
The group size is limited to a maximum of six participants, just as in all other tours.
As always and everywhere, the weather is an unknown. The program and its order might change depending on the weather conditions.

Detailed information
Day 1
The tour starts with the 30-minute transfer from the airport Oulu to the accommodation of Lapland Hotels Oulu. After check-in is time to get settled and have dinner. Afterwards, we head into the night to look for the Aurora Borealis.
Days 2-7
During these days we will visit several events of the capitol of culture Oulu (find more information for the different tour dates below), as well as nature locations to photograph river rapids, lakes, seascapes, the island Hailuoto and more. At night time we will of course chase the northern lights. As with all nature-related activities, the weather situation dictates when and which spots we visit.
You will also have time to recover from the late nights, visit other culture events or explore the area. For example you can visit the city center, the market square with its old buildings. Right next to the hotel is park Ainola, a beautiful area with many small streams and the salmon steps of Oulu river. If you want to head out to the open sea, choose the 4km walk to the beach Nallikari via the island Pikisaari and don’t forget your camera.
Day 8
After breakfast ourtour will unfortunately come to an end and we will have to pack our things to drive to Oulu airport.
All program is subject to the weather.
Oulu is located about 160km South of the Arctic Circle at the Bay of Bothnia. About 200,000 people live here. The city lies at the delta of the Oulu river. Temperatures in late August are on average about +10C (50 F) and can drop down to 0C (32 F) or below during the night. In November it is noticable colder with temperatures between +5 °C (41 F) und -10 °C ( 14 F) in daytime. At night temperatures can drop on occasion to -20 °C (-4 F).

If you want to bring your camera gear, here is a list of items. If you are unsure about anything, you can contact me during and after booking. We can go through your current gear together and figure out if and what you might still need.
Tripod
Important for night photography and long exposure photos. The tripod will minimize camera shaking. Handheld photos in darkness will not be sharp. To adjust settings comfortably, the tripod should be nearly your height. If you don’t have a tripod, you can rent one for 25 Euros for your entire stay.
Camera
Most suitable will be a dSLR or mirrorless camera where you can exchange lenses. Your camera needs to have the option of manual focus and a complete manual mode which allows you to adjust aperture, exposure time and ISO separately. Pocket cameras with a zoom might be ok in some cases, you can contact me for that when booking.
Lenses
For night and aurora photography you should bring a fast lens (meaning wide aperture, with a small f-number like f/2.8 or better) to make the most of the available light. Lenses with f/4.0 are doing fine also but you might have to crank up the ISO. Auroras often stretch all across the sky. To capture a big part of it, you want to have a wide-angle lens (24mm or wider).
For daytime photography it is good to have a basic zoom (24-70mm, 24-120mm or the like). The variety helps you to create diverse photo compositions.
If you bring a compact camera, make sure the lens is f/2.8. Again, you can contact me for that when booking.
Remote control
Use during night photography or long exposures. The remote allows you to take photos without touching the camera to avoid blurry photos.
Filters
If you want to take photos of smooth water or moving clouds, you will need a neutral density filter. A polarizer can be used to create better contrast between white snow and blue sky. A graduaded ND filter will help to balance the light difference of ground and sky.
Head lamp / Flashlight
Will be important during the night. If you can get a head lamp with a red light option or with different brightness levels, it will be helpful for your night vision.
Spare batteries
In cold weather your batteries will discharge quite fast. It will be important to have at least two extra batteries with you.
Make sure you have the right clothing. In August we have average temperature at night of about +5 °C ( F) bis 0 °C ( F). It is not cold but it will feel cold being out for several hours.
Im November temperatures can drop at night to about -15 °C ( F). Especially then warm clothing is important. In case you would like to have a warm overall, this can be booked as an extra.
Bottom layer
Best is a woolen layer. For example, merino wool is excellent.
Middle layers
If your body tends to get cold easily, bring a middle layer. Fleece usually work well.
Top layer
Top your layers off with a warm jacket and trousers, best for them will be windproof.
Shoes, socks and gloves
They will be essential as your toes and fingers will be one of the biggest challenges to keep warm. Winter boots and wool socks will keep your toes warm. For your hands it is best to bring two pairs of gloves with you. A thin pair to operate your smartphone, and thicker, windproof ones to put over the thin ones in case you get cold. In case your fingers, toes or other body parts tend to get cold, it is good to bring warmers. There are many different brands, some sell variety packs like this one.
Head, face and ears
Make sure to properly protect your head and ears against the cool nights. A woolen beanie, ear flaps and a scarf will help to keep head and neck warm.
Thermos bottle
For hot juice, tea or coffee to keep you warm during our excursions.
Laptop
To backup your photos from the camera and editing.

Aurora Revelare is a project about northern lights, which began in 2019. It combines science with culture, stories, and experiences. The project consists of two parts. First, there is an immersive show in the Experience space VISIO. There, images and videos are projected onto a 16-meter-wide and 9-meter-high wall as well as onto the floor. The show is divided in three parts: space, story, aurora. It creates a unique experience for all visitors, giving them the feeling of being inside the scenes. Second, visitors can explore a comprehensive exhibition in the newly opened Oulu Museum and Science Centre (opening early October), featuring interactive stations covering over 300 square meters, all about the Northern Lights and their origin. Thomas Kast is the curator of Aurora Revelare, working intensively on the project with others. He also captures nearly all of the northern lights photos and videos used, spending countless nights in nature.
A few weeks before the opening of the new Oulu Museum and Science Centre, we will get an idea of the project’s progress.
